Matt's feelings and moods changed from day to day. Most of the time he just tried to forget about the upcoming operation and focus on other stuff--school, his job, hanging out. But it was hard when he was leaving school to go to doctor's appointments every other day.

One of the things Matt worried about most was his looks. Even though the doctors said the scars would be big at first and eventually fade to invisible, Matt was worried he'd be permanently ugly. He wanted girls, and most of all me, to think he was attractive. He even worried about things far off in the future, like whether or not he'd be able to find a wife with his new face.

It took a lot of reassuring before and after the operation to help Matt feel better about his appearance. I told him I still thought he was gorgeous inside and out, and put my money where my mouth is by starting a major makeout session a few days after he was out of the hospital. He had lost a lot of weight, his head was swollen, and he smelled a little like medicine, so it was hard. But I knew this was the best kind of nursing.
