What were your feelings about high school?
I loved high school. I went to a small school and I was a big fish in a little pond, but I still had challenges then. Third Wave Foundation funds are directed towards high schools.
What is the Third Wave Foundation?
Freedom Summer '92 was developed into the Third Wave Foundation. Right now Third Wave grants money and funds scholarship and organization projects concerned with reproductive health issues and justice programs. Some of these programs aren't generated by young women, so Third Wave is trying to involve more young women with these causes.
Do you have a proudest moment?
The fact that Third Wave is able to exist and run without me, as a co-founder is very profound. After you spend 10 years of your life working for something you believe is important, it is satisfying to know that others also believe in your work.
Is there still a lot more work to be done in terms of feminist activism?
I think that each of us has to look at our own lives and ask ourselves what the inequalities in our lives are. You can look largely at your life, but you can also look beyond the big picture and try to see what changes could make your life more comfortable and equal to others that have different options and privileges then your own.
Second wave feminists made great legislative shifts, but younger women wonder what does that really get me anyway? What does it mean to be someone that is anti-domestic violence or pro-choice? In terms of Third Wave feminism, legislation has been put into effect to make women's lives equal to men's. However, this does not mean that our lives are equal. Rape is illegal but it still happens. Third Wave feminists need to understand that the law is not enough to create social change, and now we need to create more of a cultural shift.
