poetry about life

school uniform

We drifted into classrooms
Dead and hazy from a half-fulfilling summer
And all in furies because
All have changed
All have stayed exactly the same.

A sea of joints and nerve ends
MACHINES--right left right left
formalities up the stairs.

People smile but their teeth are daggers
The creases in their khakis placed with care
Uniform sandals and fleece vests
And the kinks in my hair play follow-the-leader.
