My question is how can I stop becoming a nervous wreck? Every time I have to do something in front of the class, I get so nervous that my legs start to shake and I start to stutter every word I say. And then just thinking about how I must look, I get even worse! Is there like a calming treatment or something? Help!!!

There is no real permanent calming treatment, but I do a couple of things to calm me down temporarily. They will probably work for you, too! When I'm really under pressure, I keep a bottle of aromatherapy lotion in my locker. When I get tense, I put some on my wrists, take a quick smell and close my eyes. I just concentrate on the smell. That helps me calm down.

I am also a shy person, so I know how it feels to stutter in front of the class. My teachers helped me out, though, and they suggested this solution: act like you're in your own world and the class is not there. Or that the class is a bunch of your friends. Also, try the counting method: Count in your head to whatever number it takes to calm you down.

Whenever I'm in front of a group of people, for whatever reason, I try to NOT look at the audience. Or sometimes it helps if I look for a friend in the audience to focus on, and pretend I'm talking only to them.

Stand in front of a mirror and imagine that you are standing in front of an audience. Then, get together a small audience, like your family, to listen to you and give you suggestions. That way, you'll really know your material and you will have already presented it. That will make things easier.

I have the same problem. I get nervous in front of groups of people. One of the things I learned in speech class was to take deep breaths. This slows down your heart. Another easy trick is to make sure that you know your subject inside and out--you don't need the extra stress of wondering how you are going to do.
