I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian. I really want to make it a part of my life, but none of my family supports me. My mom even called me "crazy." She thinks my friends convinced me to think this way.

Has anyone else ever had a hard time getting your parents to accept your vegetarianism? Or any other belief, for that matter...

    I've been there...
I'm a proud "veghead" too. At first my parents just thought it was a phase, but after a few weeks of my ranting about animal cruelty and how i can get all my nutrients from plants they took me seriously. Compromise with your parents; I have to cook my own dinner 4 nights a week, but they make veggie dishes the other 3 -- it works great!

    Go for it!
I had the same issue when I decided to become a vegetarian. My mom, her friend, and even some of my friends tried to talk me out of it. One of my friends even flat out told me he didn't think I could do it. As a matter of fact, when I told my family, they all laughed at me.

The important thing is to show people that you're serious about this. Don't back down for one second. Do some research to back up your decision. It's really helpful when people start trying to break you down. Also, maybe you want to show her some of the videos off the PETA site. There's one called "Chew on This" that presents 30 reasons to become a vegetarian. It's pretty good.

Keep it up. My parents gradually got used to it (though it took about a year) and even offered to buy me veggie burgers. It's going to take some time, but people will eventually adapt to your views.

    just deal with it
There are things you are going to do in your life and you and your parents wont always see eye-to-eye.

In reality, you should check over your reasons as to why you are becoming a vegetarian and consider all the facts. If it's because you don't like to think of what they do to the animals, but you still like some of the meats, well then chances are you won't be one for very long. Seriously, think this through for at least a month. If by the end of the month you have very good reasons to stop eating meat, then go ahead.

Always keep in mind that even if you will 'healthier' there are a lot of nutrients that we need from meat. Chances are to be healthy you will need to either eat some vegetable you don't like, or take pills. Consider all the facts before you actually stop eating meat.

    Stay Veggie.
My mom is the same way. She blames everything that goes wrong with me on not eating meat. She thinks it's unhealthy, and I've tried to tell her how unhealthy it is to eat meat. No matter what I do, she doesn't understand.

I cook my own dinner every night and always refuse whatever meat she's cooking. My advice to you is to keep up what you're doing, be a vegetarian and try not to let your parents get you down.

Becoming a vegetarian and staying one shows how much you care about the environment, and the rights of animals.

I'm a vegetarian, and my mom didn't think that it would last. Five years later I'm still one. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do, even if people don't agree with you.

    it's your choice.
You simply say, 'I respect your decision to eat meat, and it's your turn now to respect my decision to not do so.'
