My friend is very homophobic. Other than that she is a very good person, but I just can't stand being around her when she says prejudiced things. How do I make her see that her views are wrong? She won't even sit down long enough for me and my other friends to talk to her about it.

I was ignoring her opinions on the subject until our principal announced that someone ripped down the GSA (gay/straight alliance) posters and she told me afterwards that she did it. I don't just want to ignore her; I want to put a stop to her prejudiced views. Please help.

    Write a Letter
It's not always easy to talk to someone in person about something, and sometimes it's hard to get your friend to listen. Sitting down and writing a letter is a great way to tell someone something important. You can write out all your points and keep it organized. Another great thing about writing a letter: you can't get angry and start yelling at your friend and by the time she responds to the letter, her nerves will be calm too, allowing for a real discusion of the issue.

    It could get worse...
Homophobia is something hard to break. Everyone is entitled to there own views, but when it comes to things like this, it's just wrong. You need to confront her in a way that's not threatening her or saying she's wrong. Tell her she needs to show respect for other people, and keep her opinions private so no one get's hurt. Angst against people like this can turn violent and mean, and she needs to lose it or hide it. Otherwise, you need to lose her.

    I say
She can have her own opinions and express them in her own ways, but I think that if she is trying to get rid of stuff that is providing gays/straights/bis with a chance to see each other for who they really are, and not just see them for their sexual preferences, then she is crossing the line. I'm SO not a homophobe, and some of my best friends are even gay, so I don't let people get away with bad-mouthing them in front of me, and I try to get some of my other straight friends to stand up for them with me. I think that if you want to stay friends with her, you should just tell her that you don't mind her having her own opinions, or expressing them in appropriate ways, but you would prefer that she did not do it around you. If you don't care whether or not you're friends, I think you should tell her that you dont want to be hanging around with prejudice people and leave it at that.
