Every time I have to dress for gym class, I get really embarrassed. It's not because of my body--it's because I'm practically the only girl in the whole locker room that doesn't wear a thong or use tampons. I always feel really bad about myself afterwards, and it's hard for me to make friends with the girls who have lockers near me because I'm afraid they'll make fun of me (if they don't already).

I tried explaining to my mom that I'm in high school now and I really think it would help if I got the kind of underwear and hygiene products my friends wear. She keeps saying that I'm too young and that it's not a big deal anyway, but I think it is. What should I do?

    Your choice
My mom has never "allowed" me to wear thongs either. But, I pleaded with her and told her that sometimes an underwear line isn't the cutest thing in the world. I rarely ever wear them, but when I do, it's for a reason. I wear the boy shorts style and I think they're pretty damn cute. They are better than butt floss even though sometimes thongs can be pretty sweet.

Now with the tampon thing, it's your personal hygiene. Your mom shouldn't be telling you whether or not she thinks you're ready. If you don't want to walk around in a diaper pad anymore, then switch it up. Tampons make periods so much better. Now, if the only reason you want to use them is because everyone else is, look for the other reasons. I doubt anyone cares about what feminine products you use.

    It's okay!
Hey gurl. Listen, don't worry at all. There are so many other kinds of cute underwear, like boy shorts. Just be happy that you are secure about your body. I wear thongs, but I'm embarassed to wear them when I'm in gym class. Also, if you use tampons and wear thongs, you have more of a chance of getting a yeast infection, which nobody wants. About your mom, parents can be a pain, but maybe if you let the issue go for a little bit, she will think you are mature enough because you are no longer worried about what other people think.

    Hmm...
Well babe, although thongs and tampons may seem like a big thing, they really aren't. As much as I hate saying this, I agree with your mom. Now, maybe she is being a little overboard, but do you really want friends that will tease you for not using that stuff? It's your choice. I'm sure some people will tell you to go behind her back, but trust me, you will be able to use them sooner if you don't go behind her back (if you get caught). I hope I helped.

    My advice
Thongs and tampons aren't really all that great and you shouldn't feel embarassed at all. Tampons are helpful because they make having your period much less messy, BUT they take some time to get used to and they will be uncomfortable for the first few times you use them. Afterwards though, you won't even notice that they're there. Practice makes perfect. As for thongs, they erase panty lines and that's all. They're not really worth the mother-daughter bickering that most of us go through to get them. You won't really "need" one unless you wear super tight jeans. But all in all,it's your choice to wear or use what you want. What your mom says is understandable, but give her some time and she'll give you more freedom. Good luck.
