My mom thinks I'm going insane. She has threatened to send me to a psychiatrist more than once because I let her read a few of my poems. I'm really scared about going and I can't help what I write and I feel that if I don't write my poems I might do something extreme or something. And it pains me to know that my mom thinks I need to see a shrink. Please help what should I do?

    It's O K...
I totally know how you feel!!! But it's not my mom, but my DAD!!! If I were you, I'd tell my friends, and maybe even, if you have to, have a sitdown w/ your mom, it will totally help. G2G!!!

    Poems
Sounds like your mom has no clue what poems are about. I am in English 103 in college and currently learning about poems. That's what my whole class will be about. Your mom needs to understand that poems are about expressing oneself. People write for any reason they want. There are people like you, who use poetry like a journal to deal with things. Do your thing, but keep it private where she won't see it. If she takes you to a psychiatrist, then I guess you'd have to explain to the shrink that you use poetry as a way to relieve your emotions. Find some stuff online about what poetry is about and show your mother the reasons people do poetry.

A lot of parents are like your mother
A lot of Parents, even though it's extremely annoying, think their teenagers are crazy. My parents used to say the same thing until I got a bit older, but it's pretty much all the same. They would threaten to send me to a psychiatrist, and I would have liked to have a trained professinal to talk to about my problems. In all likelyhood you are not crazy--it's just a parental thing. Maybe you should talk to her about it, but as some people said before, going to a shrink could be cool. It's all about what makes you comfortable, but if you would really feel uncomfortable about it, and leveling with mother, it helps to appear as "normal" aka bland in front of her.

Wow...you just expained me and my mom
I write really depressing poems and none of them are happy at all. Then I'm interested in murders and forensics stuff like jack the ripper and gacy--stuff like that, ya know? Well my mom says I need to see a shrink...then she says that when I get my new job that I'm going to pay for the visits! It's not scary going to a shrink I've been to one before. They're nice. And they do try to help. Maybe the best thing is just to satisfy your moms thoughts and let her bring you to a shrink. They're not scary at all I promise. Then at the final session you can say ha! I told you there was nothing wrong with me mom!!!(:

    I understand, but...
Seeing a psychiatrist doesn't mean you're crazy. You mention that you feel that if you don't write your poems you might do something extreme. There is NOTHING WRONG with you because you feel this way, but I'm sure it's not a pleasant experience. A psychiatrist (or, more correctly, psychologist or therapist) can help you recognize the source of your feelings. I know it's really freaking scary but I suggest that you try it out. You have nothing to lose and if you don't ever want to go again, you don't have to. Also keep in mind that not every therapist/psychologist is the same, so give a few different ones a chance before you decide that it's not for you. Good luck!

    Don't stop writing...
You don't have to stop writing your poems--it's good to express your feelings in writing, just don't show her the poems anymore. If she asks why you stopped showing her or she asks to see other ones, just write a "nice" poem to show her so she doesn't think you're insane. Hope I helped.

Seeing a psychiatrist can be a positive experience
Maybe you should try to not think of a visit to the psychiatrist's as a threat, but rather as a good positive experience. A psychiatrist is there to help you, trained to listen and help so maybe a visit might alleviate some of the fears that you are experiencing. Ultimately, I'm sure your mom just wants to help you to be happy and feel good, but if you don't feel that you can talk to her, try to open up to the idea of a psychiatrist. Opening up, as you have been through writing, is always much better than keeping it inside.

    I know how you feel...
Everytime I get my mom angry she threatens to send me to a mental hospital. It really sucks, but I try to ignore it. Talk to someone you trust about it. Just keep writing. That's how I keep from going crazy too.

    I KNOW!
My mom found MY poems, now guess what? I'm seeing not one, not two, but three freaking psychiatrists! I hate it. I know how you feel. Make an exuse if you can or ask me for one, mine is I write those things down so I won't do something else...would you rather me write or go out and beat up my brother/sister or if you don't have one, would you rather have me do drugs? Drink? etc.... You know stuff like that...
