  Dear Heather,

Is there any correct way to wipe yourself after going to the bathroom? I was told that my way was apparently incorrect and that I can probably get an infection down there.

Hi.

Wiping correctly will help you avoid getting a vaginal infection. It's generally recommended that women wipe from front to back--especially after taking a bowel movement--to avoid spreading e-coli bacteria from the anal area. It is best to reach behind your back to wipe yourself instead of reaching between your legs.

There are some other things you can do to help avoid infection, like wearing soft, loose-fitting clothes made of non-synthetic materials. Also, wearing cotton underwear helps because it allows the vulva to "breathe." Absorbent cotton will help to keep the area dry and avoid infections.

Try giving your vulva a break at night by not wearing underwear to bed. Allow the area to access free circulating air whenever possible (and appropriate).

Take care.
