Gynecologists [also called "gynos"] are the doctors who have generously devoted their lives to the maintenance of female crotches. Sometimes they also deliver babies, in which case they are obstetricians as well (OB/Gyn). Buy the book!

For the purposes of this guide, I interviewed her during my exam. You don't have to do that when you see your gyno, but you can if you want...

Q: Why do I need to go to the gynecologist in addition to my regular doctor?

A: Most teenagers have a regular doctor they see who's actually a pediatrician, so at some stage they will graduate from their pediatrician to a primary care doctor or internal medicine. Their internal medicine doctor will look after things like their heart, lungs and blood pressure, but they typically don't do pelvic exams and pap smears.

They also don't usually prescribe birth control or test for STDs. So the gynecologist would help take care of a gynecological pelvic exam (which is an internal exam), a pap smear, STD testing, birth control issues and, down the road, pregnancy.
