Panic Disorder
<<return to table of contents

Characterized by the repeated onset of panic attacks and the constant worry that another will occur, Panic Disorder is not simply a one-time experience. People may suffer from a panic attack once in their life and never have another one. Panic Disorder, on the other hand, can be downright debilitating.

It's often associated with agoraphobia, the fear of public spaces (see the next page on Phobias for more...) since people with Panic Disorder tend to steer clear of whatever triggers their panic--which, chances are, is something out in the wide open world.

Despite the overwhelming fear that comes with a panic attack, it can be difficult for even professionals to diagnose because of the similarities to other health problems. Chest pain and palpitations can be mistaken for a heart attack. Other symptoms like tingling of the limbs, dizziness or hot flashes can be interpreted as a less threatening problem, maybe even nothing to worry about.
