back to t-shirt list

Half of one t-shirt plus half of another t-shirt equals a whole lotta fun. Get ready, sports fans. I like to use this design format to celebrate (and illustrate) some of the most famous rivalries in sports--Packers vs. Bears, Red Sox vs. Yankees, or Lakers vs. Spurs. Or, if sports aren't your thing, match cheerful with dark, white with black, or pink with army green. Pair two of your sweetie's threadbare tees to make him or her a brand-new one.

Ingredients:
  • 2 T-shirts (same size but different colors)
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Embroidery needle
  • Embroidery thread

    Instructions:
  • Spread both t-shirts flat and cut vertically up the center of each, from bottom hem to neck, through both layers so that each shirt is in two pieces.
  • Take the left side of one shirt and match it to the right side of the other shirt, overlapping the fabric 1/2" along the cut edges. Pin in place.
  • Using an external cross-stitch, sew the two halves together along the pinned edges. Remove the pins and wear it, or gift it.

  • Variations:

With the two remaining halves, make a matching (yet opposite) t-shirt (or save them for the no sew version below).

For a no sew version, grab a box of safety pins (small or medium) and attach the two halves with horizontally placed safety pins (1" to 2" apart).

For a less revealing version, overlap the rough edges, front and back, and attach them with vertically placed safety pins.

Use just one t-shirt, cut vertically up the center, and sew the two halves back together again. It's a Humpty Dumpty success story.
