I go to Boston College, which is in Chestnut Hill, about 10 minutes outside of Boston. It's a great setting: a beautiful campus with a lot of green space in an excellent location near a fun city. There are about 9,000 undergrads, but it seems a lot smaller because most students live on campus for three of their four years (off-campus junior year, then back on-campus senior year).
It seems to me like BC was almost nobody's first choice: There a lot of very bright students but most were so involved in high school extracurricular activities that they didn't get the grades to go to an Ivy League, a Notre Dame or a Georgetown. But I'd also say that the vast majority of the students at BC are incredibly happy they ended up there.
There are many options for getting involved. Community service of all kinds is extremely popular, as are musical groups. The "scene" is invariably binge-drinking (huge parties with crazy themes are really common), but at the same time, being close to a big city like Boston provides social opportunities of all kinds. There are also a lot of non-alcoholic options ON campus every weekend.
There are downsides about life at BC, including a general sense of apathy among certain parts of the community. If you asked me what I think BC needs most, I would say greater efforts toward diversity--not only in terms of race but also social class and sexual orientation. On the whole, though, I love Boston College, the strong education I am receiving and the quality people I have had the opportunity to meet.
