Getting Started
Hi. My name is Liz Tracey, your friendly neighborhood webmistress at large. I spend my days (and a good portion of my nights) working to make the world a better place through technology--installing wireless networks for people to share cat pictures, writing programs to perfect the art of dating, you get the idea.
One of the great things about all this techy goodness is that almost anyone can put up a site on the Web, and potentially be seen and heard by the world.
First, a few questions to start you thinking:
1. What do I want to say?
Is this your online diary--a quick way to write down all the things that used to be in a marble-cover notebook, but now with pictures and links? Or is this your portfolio of artwork that you've made over the years, which maybe someone's going to look at and hire you for? Each site has different needs, so think about what purposes you'll use yours for.
2. How dirty do I want to get?
No, not that...we mean, how much work do you want to do? If you just want a place to write and talk with your friends, you can probably consider a ready-made solution like a blogging site (more on that later). If this is something you want to feel real ownership of, and maybe even make a career out of, well there's no time like the present for learning code and design.
