Change your oil approximately every 5,000 miles Get a tune-up every 30,000 miles. Check your coolant, which absorbs heat from the engine, frequently. Check the tire pressure twice a month. Religiously.

IN CASE OF ACCIDENT... 1. Stay calm 2. Pull over to the side off the road if possible. 3. Make sure everyone is safe, if someone is injured, call 911 immediately. 4. Call the police to make a report. (If you don't know the number, dial 911) 5. Gather the following things from your glove compartment: insurance cards, pen, notepad and disposable camera. 6. Don't admit fault to anyone, not the other driver and not the police. (Fault is for the insurance companies and their attorneys to determine.) 7. Stay calm, take a deep breath and then exchange information with the other driver. 8. Exchange insurance information. (Tip: keep two copies of your insurance card and give this to the other party) 9. Exchange personal information, name, address and phone numbers. (Tip: ask for their ID) 10. Take pictures of the accident. Use your cell phone if you do not have a disposable camera. If pulled off the road, try to take a picture of the site where the accident actually occurred. 11. If the police come to take a report, remember to stay calm. Do not lie, and tell the officer what happened. 12. That's it... go home and tell all your friends and family. If you can't drive home, the police officer will help you get a tow truck. 13. Call your insurance company and report the accident as soon as possible.

IF YOU GET PULLED OVER... 1. Stay calm, just because you're getting pulled over doesn't mean you're going to get a ticket. 2. Be polite and follow all of the instructions of the officer. (If you're nice enough, you could get off with a warning) 3. It's not so bad and be sure to tell your parents. They're probably going to find out anyway.

CHECKING TIRE PRESSURE... Unscrew the plastic cap on the air valve (put it in your pocket, I've left too many behind at gas stations). Press the tire-pressure gauge against the valve and hold it down firmly. If you hear a hissing noise, you are letting air out. Press down harder. Read the measurement on the gauge. Add air as needed (most gas stations have provide air for free!), but don't overfill the tire.

CHANGING A FLAT TIRE... Pull over to the side off the road. Turn the engine off, apply parking brake and turn on the hazard lights. Place manual transmission cars in gear.(tip: open the hood to warn others that you are stopped for repairs) Place a large rock behind (if facing uphill) or in front (if facing downhill) the diagonally opposing wheel to prevent the car from rolling. You don't want your car rolling away without you in it! Get out the spare tire from the trunk, wrench, car jack and gloves. This could get a little messy. If you have a hubcap, remove it by using the flat end of the wrench. Loosen the nuts on the wheels: Use the wrench and place it on the nut so that it is roughly parallel with the ground and pointing to the left. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the lug nut. (Tip: stand on the wrench to loosen it. You might even have to jump on it. A great way to take out your anger.) Loosen the nuts in a star pattern: first loosen one a few turns, and then loosen the one opposite. Work across the tire until all the lug nuts are loose and unscrewed slightly. Remove the lug nuts all the way and set them aside in a place where you won't lose them and your dog won't eat them. (Tip: place the nuts in your car) Grab your jack. Place the jack under the car. Check your owner's manual for the correct and safe place to put the jack. There is usually a spot for them in between the wheels. (Tip: never use the jack under the bumper). Carefully jack up the car. Jack the car up a little higher than is necessary to remove the old tire so there is room to put the new, full tire on. Pull off the old tire. Put the spare tire on. (Tip: make sure the air valve faces out). Put nuts back on, but do not fully tighten. Tighten them the same way you loosened them: Give each nut a few turns, first one, then the one opposite, working around the wheel in a star pattern. Slowly lower the jack and remove. Tighten the lug nuts again much as you can. Put the hubcap back on.
