Do you devour newspapers and current events? You may choose to work as a press secretary for a politician, assisting in communicating their beliefs, opinions and successes. Public relations specialists, or press secretaries, keep the public informed about the activities of government officials.
A press secretary provides advice to politicians on how to deal with the media. This means you must also keep a close eye on how they are portrayed, by finding and keeping track of their coverage in the news. You will develop relationships with reporters and various media spokespeople. The ability to "pitch" stories to appropriate media is key, in addition to writing press releases and other print media.
Press Secretaries are highly skilled in news management techniques, which help the official to maintain a positive public image and avoid negative media coverage. For example, a press secretary for a member of Congress keeps constituents aware of the representative's accomplishments. They also often act as the organization or government's senior spokesperson.

Degrees in public relations, journalism and related communications experience are most valuable in getting your foot in the door. Consider attending schools and participating in programs in Washington D.C. or other centers of political activity.
