It's a way for designers to showcase their clothing to better display the fabric, fit and movement of the clothing on a person, instead of hanging on a rack in a store or in a static photo. A runway show also lets the designer show how she puts together and styles her outfits.
There are many people who work together to put on a runway show:
The set designer creates a runway and backdrop that will accent the clothing and be functional for the audience and models. She also puts together a team to actually build her design.
The lighting technician lights the stage to set the correct mood, and also to show the clothing in the best light. The sound technician is in charge of synchronizing the music with the flow and feeling of the show.
Backstage, dressers are in charge of organizing the outfits and making sure the correct models are dressed and ready to go onstage. Hair stylists and make-up artists are also backstage to make the models' hair and make-up match the theme of the clothing.
