History: Developed in 1914 in Germany as an appetite suppressant; nobody paid much attention to Ecstasy until the 1980s, when it was seen as a potentially therapeutic drug because of its empathic effects.

Effects: Users report a sense of energy and alertness similar to that from amphetamines, as well as a feeling of happiness, openness, and caring for everyone. Ecstasy causes a rise in body temperature, usually resulting in acute dehydration. Effects begin in 20 minutes to an hour and last for 4 to 6 hours, with the peak experienced in about an hour.

Risks: There's a serious risk of overdose, leading to heart attacks, dangerously increased body temperature (which can lead to lethal dehydration), seizures, and death, especially when used in conjunction with a lot of physical activity. High doses can lead to teeth clenching, shakiness, dry mouth, nausea, and cramping. Not much is known about the long-term effects of taking Ecstasy, although there is some concern that it can cause liver problems and damage to the brain.

Do not combine with: MAO inhibitor antidepressants.
