OPIODS
(Pain Relievers)
Common Brands/Types: OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin (hydrododone), morphine, codeine, cough syrup
Source: The lab (some opioids, such as morphine and codeine, are derived from the same sources as heroin and opium, while others are purely synthetic).
Legal code: Only legal either by prescription or over-the-counter.
History: Opioids have been around in various forms for thousands of years. While they are still in common use as pain relievers, recreational use has been illegal in the United States since 1914.
Effects: Opioids are commonly prescribed or taken as pain relievers in low doses. When used recreationally in higher doses, opioids can produce a state of euphoria.
Risks: Common side effects of opioid use are: drowsiness, constipation, nausea and dizziness. High dosages of opioids also put the user at risk for respiratory depression, which can be fatal. Tolerance to opioids develops very quickly, so there is a very high risk for dependence. Withdrawal symptoms can be very severe.
Do not combine with: Alcohol, or any other downers.
Addiction rating: While it is very easy to develop physical dependence to opioids, they are not considered highly addictive.
