BENZODIAZEPINES
(Valium, Xanax)

Found in: Valium, Xanax, Rohypnol (prescription anti-anxiety medications).

Source: The lab.

Legal code: Legal by prescription. (Mostly prescribed by doctors to treat anxiety and related disorders).

History: Earlier sedatives synthesized by scientists were too risky to prescribe to patients because of the threat of overdose. In 1957 scientists synthesized the first benzodiazepine compound, Librium, which was heralded as a miracle cure for anxiety or depression.

Effects: As with sedatives, barbituates and quaaludes, users report a decrease in anxiety level and a sense of relaxation and calm. But unexpected, unpredictable opposite effects, such as increased anxiety and hostility, are possible. At higher doses, drowsiness and loss of motor control occur.

Risks: Memory may be impaired for events that happen while under the influence of these drugs. Decreased learning ability, vertigo and lightheadedness are other possible side effects. These effects can last for a long time.

Do not combine with: Alcohol (which will dangerously impair coordination) or anything else that makes you sleepy (i.e., opiates, anesthetics and other sedatives)--these combinations can lead to death from suppression of breathing and heart rate.

Roofies (Rohypnol) have been slipped into people's drinks to cause a sedative effect, earning it a reputation as "the date rape drug." Be extra alert when drinking with people you don't know very well, and watch for strange effects like dizziness and confusion after a drink.

Addiction rating: Low
