It's important to choose a sunblock that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. But if the SPF only shows how long a lotion or spray will block UVB, and broad spectrum offers no guarantees against wrinkles, what's a girl to do? There's an ingredient called avobenzone, also known as Parsol 1789, which blocks both UV rays of all wavelengths. Check the ingredients on your bottle to make sure you have it.
Now to the basics...
Apply your sunblock at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun between 10am and 4pm, when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Reapply every two hours because, as we know, sunblock doesn't last forever. The higher the SPF, the longer you can afford to go between applications.
It's important for people with sensitive skin types to choose a minimum SPF of 30, while those with less sensitive skin can choose no less than SPF 15. (To find out your skin type, check out the chart on the next page.)
To protect your lips and keep them soft at the same time, slather on a lip balm that offers at least an SPF 15. After all, the sun's harsh rays are the leading cause of lip cancer.
Protect your scalp by wearing a hat or dabbing some oil-free sunblock on your head where you part your hair.
Protecting eyes is easy, since most sunglasses provide 100% UV protection, but look for the sticker that says so, just in case. Wraparound sunglasses are the best, but big bug glasses a la Jackie O also do the trick, while protecting the delicate skin around the eyes as well.
