I'm convinced the wrap skirt was invented by a woman, because only someone who understands firsthand our mood swings, weight fluctuation and desire for clothes that are both practical and stylish could have come up with such an ingenious creation. The t-shirt wrap skirt is even more forgiving than most. Because it's adjustable and stretchy, it fits perfectly--no matter what. ?
Ingredients:
3 T-shirts (L or XL)
Measuring tape
Tailor's chalk
Scissors
Straight pins
Needle
Thread
Instructions:
Add 15 to your waist measurement, and then divide by 3 (x). (Example: For a 36" waist, add 15 to get 51; divide by 3 to get 17".) Lay two of the t-shirts flat and cut out a rectangle (through both layers) from each with a length of 16" and a width corresponding to the measurement (x) above. Separate the four rectangles.
Place two rectangles (from different t-shirts) on top of each other, right sides together, and pin along one of the 16" long edges. Sew along the pinned edge using a whipstitch. Remove pins.
With right sides together, lay a third rectangle against one of the 16" edges of the pieces you just sewed and pin and sew as you did in step 2. Remove pins.
Lay the third t-shirt flat, cut off the hem just above the stitching, and cut an 8 H" loop off the bottom. Cut through this loop, and then cut the strip in half lengthwise so you have two long strips, each 4 G" wide (for the two belt parts).
Fold the strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides out, and pin along the raw edges, leaving the ends open. Whipstitch the pinned edges.
Turn the strips right side out and pin the end of one strip to the top outside corner of the third rectangle (sewn in step 3). It should be about 1" from the top edge and should overlap the rectangle by 1 1/2". Pin the second strip to the top corner of the adjacent rectangle, as shown.
Tack the strip ends to the skirt by using a running stitch to sew a 1 1/4" square through all layers, as shown.
One third of the way across the top edge of the skirt, make a 1I"-high vertical slit 1/2" inch from the top.
Remove any remaining pins and wrap the skirt around your waist. Slip the end of one strip across the front of your waist, through the slit (from inside to outside), and around the back of your waist to the front, as shown.
Tie the two strips together at your side and trim the long one, if needed.
