FIVE QUESTIONS WITH THREE TATTOOED GIRLS
Brandi, Shannon, Sarah

1. Why did you decide to get tattooed?

Shannon: I love the idea of the body being a canvas. I'm a storyteller, and each one of my tattoos tells a story. It seems fitting.

Brandi: I've wanted a tattoo since I was 13, for whatever reason, but I didn't find the right design until five years later.

Sarah: I had always wanted one, not sure why. I just loved the idea of putting something on me that I chose, no one else, and it was something that would always be with me.

2. How old were you when you got your first tattoo? How old are you now? Are you finished yet?

Shannon: I got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday. My parents said that if I waited until then to get one, they would pay for it, and they did. I'm 24 now. I don't think I'm finished--a friend of mine is going to add on to one of the tattoos on my back. I'm not going to get sleeves or anything, though.

Brandi: 18. 24. I think so. I fell in love with the tattoo design I got, and I haven't found anything else I'd want on my body forever.

Sarah: I was 18, maybe 19 when I got my first tattoo. I'm 24 now. I'm not finished, I'm not sure just what else I want yet, but a very smart friend of mine had a great idea that had to do with putting words on a few different people.

3. How does this affect your professional life?

Shannon: It doesn't. I work for a guitar magazine. Many of my co-workers have tattoos. However, even if I worked in a place that frowned on tattoos, I could cover all of them. I like that I don't have to do that here.

Brandi: Since the tattoo's on my back it's easily hidden. I've run across a few people I know who look down on tattoos and piercings, but they mainly keep quite. Mostly people either compliment the design or comment on how big it is. But image isn't the largest concern in the academic world.

Sarah: It doesn't. Mine are both on my back, so I can easily cover them up if I need to make sure no one sees them. The people at my job have seen both of mine though, and no one has a problem with them.
