Former gURL editorial intern, Alexis Finc, has considered herself an activist since she was in middle school. Working in the field of women's rights, Alexis has lent her time to a number of causes, most importantly Take Back the Night, an annual rally/march to protest rape and sexual assault. In this guide, she'll talk about her own experience organizing Take Back the Night (TBTN) and introduce you to two other gURL activists.
Don't know what an activist is? Want to become one? You're in the right place.
Meet Alexis... The Accidental Activist
When I found out my favorite teacher was going to be fired in eighth grade due to budget cuts, my mom told me to channel my anger into a letter and send it to the local paper. A few weeks later the letter made the editorial page. Soon afterwards, a school meeting was called and my teacher got his job back.
It pissed a lot of teachers off and I was a bit embarrassed by all the hoopla, but it taught me that no matter how young you are, or how limited your means, if you really believe in something, you have the power to change it. That's what activism is all about--creating change.
