References to hickeys have been mentioned in pop culture since the beginning of the 20th century. A song from 1934 contained the following lyric, "Godamighty made a 'gator wid hickeys all over his Tail," (printed in American Ballads and Folk Songs, Adam Lomax) and the following line appeared in a magazine in 1937, "Hickeys spoil everything. I know. I had 'em until I began eating Fleischmann's yeast." (Ten-Story Love Magazine).
'90s rap duo, Funky See, Funky Do released a song paying homage to the hickey: "A kiss is fine but it don't always last, that's why I got a hickey of your name on my ass."
