Doomsday cults (sometimes called apocalyptic or destructive cults) refer to religiously based groups that use intense, controlling tactics and are likely to cause loss of life among its members. In other words, doomsday cults are the groups that make the 9 o'clock news. Objectives and practices of these groups vary widely, but some examples include The Family (led by Charles Manson), Solar Temple and Heaven's Gate.
