The majority of people infected with HSV-2 don't have any signs or symptoms. However, two weeks after contracting the virus, a cluster or outbreak of blisters may appear on or near the genitals, anus or rectum. The blisters will generally burst, leaving ulcers or sores that will usually disappear within a couple of weeks.
A second outbreak can happen anywhere from weeks to months after the first outbreak, and the next outbreak will typically be shorter--and less severe--than the first one. The type and variety of symptoms a person can experience may include vaginal discharge, itching, burning and/or tingling in the infected area.
