The term pedophilia was coined in 1886 by psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing. Krafft-Ebing believed some pedophiles had a solely sexual attraction to children, while others pretended the child was an adult they desired but couldn't have. He also found that some pedophiles get sexually aroused when forcing a child to participate in sexual activities.
Many pedophiles report being sexually abused as children. They also usually have (or had) highly conflicted relationships with their mothers, including having been emotionally or physically abused or neglected by them. Pedophiles that target family members usually do so as a way of dealing with a lack of satisfaction in their relationship with their spouses. (This does not mean, however, that every dissatisfied spouse will become a pedophile. It might just be a catalyst for underlying issues.)
