--Men are less likely to be depressed. However they are also less likely to seek help, and so may deal with their depression longer than women. They are also more likely to become angry or hostile, or to use alcohol or drugs to deal with what they're feeling.
--Elderly people can be depressed for many reasons. They may have lost loved ones, had trouble adjusting to living alone or feel physically unwell. Many cases of depression in elderly people go untreated because they often do not seek help.
Causes: Although psychologists argue over what specifically leads to depression, it is accepted by most that depression is caused primarily by low levels of certain chemicals in the brain. Many other factors, like stress, having negative beliefs and a family history of depression, can also contribute.
